There was a time when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had just seven bucks in his pocket, a major football injury, and no idea what he was going to do with the rest of his life. That’s why the superstar actor described being part of of the 2019 TIME 100 list of the Most Influential People as one of the biggest moments of his career.
As Johnson put it on Instagram before the list was revealed: “Life can be so bat shit unpredictable as I’m right back in the place (Calgary) where my $7 bucks story began – and it’s also on the eve of announcing to you one of the biggest honors of my entire career.”
Johnson made the list alongside athletes and entertainers like NBA star LeBron James, soccer star Mohamed Salah, golfer Tiger Woods, actor Mahershala Ali, Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel star Brie Larson, and Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden.
For his entry on the TIME 100, Johnson got a write up from his Fast & Furious co-star Gal Gadot.
“There is no one in Hollywood quite like Dwayne Johnson,” Gadot wrote. “Dwayne is someone who believes the sky is the limit and will go above and beyond to make sure he gives 100% every single day, whether he’s at the gym, working with his charity (the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation), being with his family and friends, or working on a new project.”
Coming up, Johnson is keeping himself as busy as ever, with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Jumanji 3, Black Adam (part of the Shazam! universe), and Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt on the horizon over the next couple years.
So if you need some inspiration to take your next adventure or challenge, remember that at one point Johnson had just seven bucks in his pocket and was at a major crossroads in his life and career.
